How is it that I can manage to pack more crap for a local three-day convention than I ever did in the military when I had to be prepared at all times for a 30-day deployment?

I love my hobbies. ;-)

Oh yeah, and before I forget, I'll actually be staying at the con, thanks to [info]caramida offering me floor space. So at least I don't have to haul ass back and forth from the house, and I can now indulge in the partying a bit more than I was planning.

I swear, if I don't have fun this weekend, there's no help for me anymore.

Oh look...it must be a DunDraCon weekend...it's raining buckets.

[info]camino_volare will be soooo happy.

There's a longer post-ConQuest entry coming, probably tomorrow. Today was infusion day for me, so I'm barely alive right now. However, there's something I think the "Llogyr" players would appreciate:

Logan's picture stream of the costumed folk from the "Llogyr" Game.

[info]britgeekgrrl told me something about the picture below that I'm glad she didn't share at the time of the game...

Anyone ever watch HBO's "Rome?"

OK, so most of the game stuff is done (I've got to go through one more edit of the characters for [info]britgeekgrrl, as she's brain fried when she gets home from work and quite honestly did enough in just writing all of them in the first place), and I've got a couple of pages of handouts to write for one character (he's got a diary that's important to the plot, you see).

No big deal. I can actually knock that stuff out in a couple of hours. If everything goes totally to hell, I can finish up the edits Friday morning before heading to the hotel, and print everything on site (I LOVE having a laptop and a portable printer).

And packing? Again, no big deal, as with the exception of [info]ratontheroad's LARP (for that one I'm being furnished with most of my costume items, courtesy of [info]rani23), this is actually a costume-light con for me, so packing is going to be a breeze.

So what's my problem? Well, I have no idea where Johanna and I will be sleeping Friday, Saturday, or Sunday nights. We can't afford a room, you see, so many people have offered to help us out. [info]deirdremoon and [info]tronpublic have very generously offered to let us use their spare room, as they live only a couple of miles from the hotel, but we'd like to stay AT the con if entirely possible.

If you're one of the people that offered us space, could you remind me here, so I can work out a schedule?

(Oh yeah, and in case it slipped your mind, it's juuuuust about T-26 hours to con. Ju know who I'm talking to, oh jess ju do...)

Yeah yeah yeah...I know, I haven't posted for a while. Given everything that's been going on, I didn't want to depress anyone. Still here, still on chemo, still broke.

But [info]britgeekgrrl and I have a gaming convention that we're looking forward to, so maybe that'll lift our mood. And in that vein, have a flier...

So for some masochistic reason, instead of taking this weekend as one of recovery from DunDraCon, instead I'm slogging into the city Friday-Sunday for WonderCon. Good Lord I'm stupid.

As far as DunDraCon went, it was a good con for gaming (LARPs every day and night, excepting Saturday evening), but an even better one for partying and catching up with people I don't see nearly often enough. Didn't run anything this year (for reasons that are two long to explain, Chuckling Cthulhu won't be running an event at DDC ever again), which made things very relaxing.

However, because it's Chuckling Cthulhu's 10th anniversary this year, at KublaCon we'll be running a Ghostbusters LARP (written by [info]logan_w and [info]borderlad), and at ConQuest SF, it appears we'll be running two events - the long awaited sequel to my previous Galactica LARP, and an as-yet untitled Cthulhu LARP that Johanna is writing.

Busy times, indeed.

If you ever, EVER wanted a few White Wolf supplements to round out your collection, you need to run (not walk) to Black Diamond Games today before 4PM. The store is doing a semi-annual game auction (which I'm helping out at), and someone has donated a COMPLETE collection of White Wolf books.

All of them.

Every corebook, every supplement, every special (like the half-size chapbooks, such as "The Book of Nod"). being sold in lots of three to five books for minimum bids of between $5-$7 per lot.

If you, or anyone you know, is looking for that particular book, and you want a shot at it cheap, get down here ASAP.

Firstly, happy birthday BJ. I'd make some sort of joke about age, but then people would point out how old I am, and then it just gets ugly.

...

The other day a friend and I were discussing ciders, and I told him about my favorite, which isn't imported over here (at least, anywhere *I* can find it). He'd never heard of it, so for him (and all the others that have heard me wax philisophic about it before), here is a description of "K" Cider. If anybody ever gets a line on where it can be found in the Bay Area, cut a brother some slack and tell me, would'ja?

...

Still trying to get my shit together for DunDraCon, and I still don't have a surgery date yet. If the fucknuts at Kaiser can't give me a date by the end of the week, or if they try and schedule it so that it in ANY WAY keeps me from attending the con, we will have words. Words.

...

This week we here at Casa Cthulhu got some new clothes and a new laptop, and next week we're getting some new (and badly needed) bookshelves. I think we've stimulated the economy enough, thanks.

...

I think that about covers this week. Tune in next week for more of the same (with less of the spending money, but more whining about not being ready for a gaming convention).

(EDIT: The BevMo in Antioch supposedly has "K" Cider in stock. We'll find out tomorrow, won't we?)

Yeah yeah...I know. I haven't posted for a while. Honestly? I've been getting tired of talking about the cancer, and lately that seems to be ALL I was able to post about. So I took a break for a while. And if you've been keeping up with [info]britgeekgrrl's journal (and shame on you if you haven't), you'll know we've had some ups and downs lately, and those have kind of pre-occupied me as well. Hopefully I'll get around to posting more often, if only as a means of getting me away from the computer games I've been playing incessantly.

However, just to keep you updated, I do have another surgery coming up sometime before the end of January. This time it's to get a small tumor off my liver. To add to the fun, my gall bladder will have to go as well, as the tumor is just pressing into it, and the surgeon feels it's better to be safe than sorry. I'm probably looking at three to four days recovery in the hospital, which won't be so bad as long as I don't get a next-door neighbor who screams all the time, as I did my last visit. In any case, I should be up and around in plenty of time for DunDraCon.

And that's all I've got to say about that.

...

In other news (and this pertains solely to gaming), does anyone out there know of a really good wiki hosting site? I want to make some pages for my ongoing 7th Sea game, but I know exactly diddily about making and maintaining wikis, and I'd like the process to be as painless as possible. Help?

...

Damn, but does watching New Hampshire Primary results rolling in make me want to run a West Wing-ish LARP when the Democratic and Republican National conventions kick off. Rent a hotel room someplace, invite all my LARP friends to wear their best power suits, and set up a couple of TV's to watch the fun as lobbyists and White House staffers.

I might have to give that some thought.

...

Almost forgot. Got my mail-in ballot for the California Primary today, so that's my reminder for my annual "go out and vote, f*ckers" message. Ready?

Go out and vote, f*ckers.

More Medical Fun

OK, for those of you that have been waiting, here's an updated scoop (from notes taken with meetings with the surgeon who will be doing the eventual operation and the oncologist I'm working with):

I have one primary cancer site, about 8 cm into my lower intestine. We've done multiple images through ultrasound and CT scans, and everything has come back negative for spread, meaning that this is the only site where there is any cancer. The polyp I have is considered a T3-N1 lesion, which means that it's a large tumor (which is what's causing the constipation and pain), but the N1 means that there has been no metastasis - it hasn't spread.

The surgeon believes I'm very likely to have a permanent colostomy after surgery; however, there is a small chance he will be able to complete a resection without the colostomy - that we won't know until the time of surgery when he can examine the entire colon. (A resection means that I'd still have use of my bowels without a colostomy bag.) I've got a colonoscopy scheduled for tomorrow afternoon, which will also help determine how extensive the surgery will be.

For sure I'm going to be going through a course of radiation/chemotherapy. I'm seeing a radiologist at John Muir Medical Center on Tuesday, and we'll determine the start date and the length of treatment at that time. We're not sure how long I'll be on the chemo/radiation, but surgery will probably be scheduled "six to eight weeks" out (from ending chemo/radiation). Given that the surgeon wants to see me six weeks from now, I'm assuming, but not certain, the chemo/radiation will last 6-8 weeks and then surgery will be scheduled after that. So the surgery might be around June/July - possibly earlier depending on how I respond to the chemo, his schedule, etc.

The chemo they're having me start on is called Xeloda. Unlike most other types, this is in pill form, so no injections or shunts. Also, I won't be losing my hair or facing any of the other usual side-effects, except I might get dried skin on my hands. A good hand lotion will alleviate any problems there. After the surgery I'll be looking at maybe another four to six weeks of chemo, just to make sure we got all of the little bastard.

Both the surgeon and the oncologist are of the opinion that we've caught this super early, and that the chances of getting it all and having no recurrance is in the high 90%. I'm gonna be sick for a while, that's for sure ([info]britgeekgrrl's father's wife is helping me get my disability paperwork together, because for sure I'm going to be out of work for about a month just before and after the surgery), but things look good otherwise.

If things go as scheduled, I'm going to be getting pretty under the weather right around Kublacon, so I'm thinking it'd be a good idea now to pull my proposed game. I don't want to, but better that than putting on a bad show because I'm too sick to run the game effectively.

More posts later, as it looks to be a slow day here. Comments and cheerful distractions are most gratefully appreciated.

I'm on the horns of a dilemma. Here's my problem.

[info]britgeekgrrl and I are in the process of thrashing out a plot for a live-action role-playing game we're thinking about running at ConQuest 2007. In concept, it's what we're calling our "West Wing" LARP - a game set in the White House during a crisis. It'll probably have Cthulhu Mythos elements to it, but what exactly I ain't saying.

The general plot and some ideas for the characters have progressed fairly well, but my problem is that I don't know how the government actually works as well as I should. Sure, I watched "The West Wing" until my eyes bled, but I don't know enough to be able to say, "well when event X happens, the Secret Service will do this, and when event Y happens the Secretary of State will do this."

What I'd like to do is set up a filter where I can lay out some plot ideas and situations, and have those of you who are way smarter than I am about such things (I'm lookin' especially at you, [info]wcg and [info]psyop6) help me figure out how the government would react. I'll tell you now, if you're planning on attending the con and playing in the game, don't opt in on the filter, 'cause I intend to blow some major plot points.

So...anyone care to help a brother out?

Friday Thoughts

Adama Ain't Easy Bein' a Pimp
Bullet Points for a Friday:

  • Fitness: I've finally (FINALLY) started at the gym. Core, cardio, and stamina training. I think my thighs are going to fall off. As I'm going today at lunch, you should all be able to hear the whining by, oh, 12:04pm.

  • Gaming: Ran my 7th Sea tabletop last weekend. Man. I know now I'm not eighteen years old anymore. Eight hours of what's essentially a one-man play with heckling from the audience takes it out of a guy. And with eight full-time players who are all smarter than me (even the ten-year old), you can bet I'm workin' my ass off the entire time. I love my group, but there are days I'm glad that we only meet once a month.

  • Television: The DVR is paying for itself these days, I'm here to tell you. Heroes, Battlestar Galactica, Studio 60, Rome, SG-1 and Atlantis (when they come back off hiatus), the re-mastered Star Trek TOS...I need another day in the week just to keep up on my shows!

  • Life: My dad's back from Poland for a while. Much like Hotblack Desiato from "Hitchiker's Guide to the Galaxy," except instead of staying dead for tax purposes he has to come back to the States. How long he's staying this time is anybody's guess, so I'm going to try and squeeze in a visit before he jets off again.

  • Work: Still doesn't suck. Waiting for other shoe to drop.

  • Icons: Got a new one, courtesy of [info]prettypinkdork. You can never have enough Mack Daddy Adama userpics, that's what I always say.

Ahhhh...DVR. Without you in my life I was able to occasionally read a book, or answer e-mail. Now, you tempt me with twelve hours of pre-recorded episodes of The West Wing and Mythbusters, all at the touch of a button.

Damn you. Damn you to hell.

Recently, I've been getting asked by some people about what happened on Friday night at ConQuest 2006 between myself and a "reporter" from KCBS. The simple answer is this - yes, there was a guy taking interviews, and yes, I did chase him off. For the more complete answer, and for my myriad reasons for doing what I did, I explain myself here )

Star Trek turns 40

As a young man of a heady nineteen days old, I have no real memory of Star Trek's debut on NBC, but according to my mom she timed my feedings so that I'd give her some relative peace while she watched her show.

Thus, for three years, my mother helped me form an unhealthy relationship between Mr. Spock and food. Those of you that have seen me lately may interpret that as you will.

At ConQuest this last weekend, many people came up to me and castigated me for not telling anyone how the work situation turned out. To you people I say this:

PHTHBBT!

However, there is an epilogue to the story – Even though I made the decision to go with the company I'm working at now, I continued the interview process with Company B anyway, 'cause I was curious to see what the offer would be if they made one. After a couple of meetings I stopped hearing from them, and I assumed that they'd gone with another candidate and just neglected to call me back (sadly, this isn't an isolated incident amongst companies that are hiring these days).

So I'm at the new job. Things are pretty good here. I'm busy, but not swamped. Most of the new co-workers are pretty decent people, with the notable exception of the office receptionist/office assistant (I'll call her "J"). She's been here a few years, and has that "I'm The Office Goddess And You Better Learn That Now" attitude. She's also somewhat of a bitch to just about everybody – especially when she realizes that you've been brought in to essentially be her boss in a couple of years time (my supervisor ("P") is retiring maybe at the end of 2008, and I'm supposed to take over for her when the time comes). However, she's alienated everybody in the firm, including the owner and CEO ("S"), and has no one on her side (after one particularly nasty (and public) snit fit, both P and S took me aside and told me that they wanted to make sure that I wasn't thinking of leaving because of J's attitude, and that if it came down to choosing between us, I was going to win hands down). So I can live with that annoyance.

Anyway, I'm settling in around here when Company B calls out of the blue, just before I head off to ConQuest, informing me that they wanted to give me an offer. Talk about timing. So I gave them a call back, and confirmed that they couldn't pay me near what I'm making here, and the benefits certainly didn't match up. So I thanked them but declined the offer.

It's not the most creative of jobs, but at least I'm not looking at an incipient ulcer working here, and for me that's definitely a plus.

Like I might have mentioned, I went with [info]britgeekgrrl to ConQuest last weekend, and had a better time than I was expecting. Obviously, we had a blast catching up with all of the compadres we don't get to see often enough. I'm still not thrilled with the hotel (the staff just have no sense of urgency when doing anything), but the con itself (from a LARP'ing standpoint) was alright. If the con staff can hammer out the problems from this last year (mostly regarding the tabletop GM's and what constitutes enough volunteered time to warrant a badge), then maybe we'll go next year.

So there we are. All in all, I had a much better time than I thought I would. Good gaming, better (and some newer) friends, and surprisingly drama-free (well, until today at least, but that's a story for another time and a locked filter). Today was spent doing a little training for the new job (yeah, I got one - I'm an art gallery manager now...ain't that a kick?) and watching the front left brake disk drop out of the car.

No, I really wish I WAS kidding about that last one.

Finally, everyone who doesn't know her say hello to [info]tacky_tramp, who made her father proud, even if she didn't trust me enough, and whom will now probably refer to me as "Broody McBroodypants." (Long, long story. Just don't ask.)
